By smartworkoutmidtown, on December 2nd, 2011% One of the reasons why many people get into the fitness industry is to share their knowledge with others and assist them in reaching their goals. However, when you work in the industry, one of the very best benefits is that you are surrounded by like-minded individuals who share that passion. Eventually, if you’re lucky you’ll find yourself working at a place where the staff is all supportive of each other, help out to get clients to reach their goals, and find that each instructor also has passions outside the workplace. And today, we’d like to showcase that.
One of our newer additions to the Smart Workout staff, Mary Silverstein, also runs The Pink Tutu Ballet Company. When she isn’t kicking someone’s butt here at our fitness facility, Mary choreographs numbers for performances! Over Thanksgiving weekend, Mary’s company was featured in a Showcase at Alvin Ailey.
Check out the video here. It was an amazing show, with incredible reviews, and we are so proud to say that Mary is a part of our team!
Mary also went through our Pilates Certification program, and has already had amazing success teaching. Through dedication and growth, we think Mary is a perfect example of how to turn a passion into a successful career- and we were happy to help her through that journey!

I know many trainers, professional and knowledgeable that will say if you want to lose weight you must, must do more cardio. However, I only partially agree with this statement.
More and more studies and articles are being published about the effects of weight lifting on the body and it’s ability to burn fat and essentially lead to weight loss. Yes, cardiovascular workouts are important, so I don’t want people to think I am discounting them. You do need to have some sort of training to keep the fat off of the muscles. But, more and more people are becoming aware that strength training can actually lead to a great amount of weight loss. How? Strength training has the ability to boost the metabolism in a way that cardio workouts just don’t. While essentially you are burning less calories WHILE working out than you would in a cardio workout, AFTER the workout is when weight training really helps. Your body is still burning calories after the workout more consistently and at an even pace compared to a cardio session.
Here is a great article from active.com that breaks down the benefits of weight training.
So, does this mean you should skip the cardio and do more weight training session in order to lose weight? Not necessarily. As I said before, cardiovascular workouts are not only important for the body, but should also be a part of any weight loss regime. Balance is key.
For example, at Smart Workout, each of our personal training sessions include both cardio and strength training work- no matter what your fitness goal. Depending on your specific goals, we will create a program that works best for you, but each program will best maximize your fitness efforts when both cardio and weight training workouts are practiced.
If weight loss is your goal, be sure to create a program, or find a trainer or fitness facility that will assist you in building a well rounded, diverse cardiovascular and weight training program.
Here’s to your Health!
